IT Strategy


Most organizations today are heavily dependent on information technology(IT)
and significantly impacted by its reliability, efficiency and responsiveness.Yet
despite its importance and significant investments in advanced software and
platforms, senior leadership remains unsatisfied. Leaders complain that the
implementation of information technology solutions takes too long, costs too
much and does not keep pace with quickly evolving strategic business goals.

It doesn't have to be that way.In fact, IT organizations can harness two fundamental points of leverage and enhance both their efficiency and responsiveness.

  • The strategic consideration of risk as an integral part of IT infrastructure helps create cost-effective, manageable and sustainable solutions. IT organizations address many elements of risk mitigation, including regulatory compliance, security, privacy assurance, disaster recovery, records management, change management etc, but all too often, these considerations are addressed tactically late in the development cycle and are not constructively built into the fabric of an efficient, sustainable architecture.
  • IT effectiveness and efficiency can be produced over time as a result of
    modular design, long-term architectural planning for modular reuse, and highly disciplined adherence to the plan for reuse and effective integration. When each IT solution is designed to optimize only its own efficiency, it does not often contribute to the efficiency of the overall infrastructure, and it can
    complicate rather than simplify the IT environment for the next IT solution.

These two fundamental principles for creating leverage are embodied in IT
strategic planning that helps achieve the delicate balance between managing risk (preserving value) and increasing performance (creating value). It doesn’t have to be that way. See the chart at left
