CSR at KPMGan international perspective
UK
Environment is a key area of interest for the UK practice. Its
environment programme aims at 'Reducing, Reusing and Recycling'
resources. The programme has ensured that 100 per cent of the energy
used in KPMG buildings is from renewable resources. Similar savings
have been achieved through increased non-confidential paper recycling
and car pools. Old office equipment was donated to schools and charities,
and printers that could not be reused were recycled. The practice
has set a target of GBP 700,000 in cost savings. Up to 50 per cent
of these savings will be donated to a charity chosen by the staffThe
Children's Trust.
Germany
Four offices of the German firm participated in 'Make a Difference
Day' on September 10. They renovated the garden in a children's
home, painted rooms in a shelter for homeless people, supported
disabled persons as running partners in a sports tournament, and
put up a library for and with disabled people. Members of the social
service organisations working with each of these sections of society
lauded the understanding shown by the KPMG staffers. The KPMG volunteers
found the experience invaluable, and enthusiastically voiced their
intention to participate in similar activities in the future.
China
The Shanghai office works with Operation Smile, which provides
cleft lip and palate operations for people across the country. In
addition to generating funds for operations through fun runs, etc.,
KPMG staffers provide another significant service by acting as translators
for international surgeons working with patients. They translate
post-operative care and speech training instructions for Chinese
patients. They managed to raise enough money to fund 125 operations
over the last two years.
Sri Lanka / Thailand
When a tsunami struck Southeast Asia in December 2004, the tragedy
affected KPMG in a personal way. Some of our staff and their families
lost their lives. KPMG member firms, partners and staff from across
the world responded to the disaster in a swift and generous manner.
Contributions collected helped KPMG fund homes for 180 families
across five villages in Sri Lanka.
In Thailand, KPMG International contributed USD 250,000 to put
in place continuous assistance programmes for orphaned school students.
Partners and staff contributed blankets for students. A computer
learning centre was also established to provide new IT infrastructure
for the selected school. Teachers and students were also trained
to use the new systems and applications provided by KPMG.
